What It’s Really Like To Take A Long Road Trip With Young Kids
Having just returned from our third really long road trip with our two kids - 11,127 kilometres this time - I feel like I can vocalize the whole truth…
If I had to summerize: Its exhausting but SO worth it!
Road tripping is just in our blood - Shane and I both grew up taking lots of long road trips with our parents, and it’s our favourite way to travel with our own kids. Since we live twelve hours away from our families, at only a couple of weeks old both of our kids started young - Sophie at three weeks old (in the dead of winter) and Simon at two weeks old.
There are slow drivers, hungry travellers (young and old), gross hotel rooms, too much screen time, hard to find parks, not enough snacks, and tired eyes…. But there is also stunning scenery, new favourite cafes, lots of reading, great life and homeschool lessons, epic hikes, and sweet road trip tunes!
I have done the last two road trips with my mama and the kids (Shane flies down to meeet us to be more efficient with his time away from work). Even though we feel haggard, and jokingly ask one day in “what were we thinking"?!?” once we’re home we're all looking forward to our next one!
Road trips with young kids aren’t for the faint of heart… expect to leave your expectations at home and pack lots of patience, but it will be SO worth it, I promise!
Until I blog again,
Alex
