5 Random Things That I’m Looking Forward to About Moving to Austin, Texas

Happy National Texas Day y’all! I fell down the rabbit hole of pictures from our past trips to Texas the other night, and it got me thinking about some of the super random things I’m looking forward to about moving (you can read more about that here and here). So naturally, I thought I’d share ;) In no particular order, here they are…

Bluebonnets

If you didn’t know, bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas and grace Texas highways, fields, gardens, and more! As an extension of the highway beautification efforts in the United States, Lady Bird Johnson encouraged the planting of native plants along Texas highways and they are now a common sight. On our most recent trip to Texas last Spring, we were able to be there when they were in bloom and it made me so very happy!!

Target

Say it with me friends (in your best French accent, of course) “tar-jay!” Strolling the aisles of Wal-Mart is simply not the same. Getting a Starbucks, strapping children (and my husband sometimes lol) into the shopping cart, and browsing the dollar spot, Hearth & Hand collection, grabbing a few groceries and maybe a new outfit is my idea of a good time!

Mexican Food

I feel like the further one gets from the Mexican border, the fewer, and less exciting options there are for some good Mexican food. And being all the way up in Sherwood Park, Alberta, I truly notice the underwhelming selection. Yes, we do have a few Mexican restaurants here, and yes, I have tried most of them (I even did the design work for one, but that’s another story! lol) but they’re just not the same. It’s not like the food is bad, it’s just not amazing, you know? I grew up eating absolutely delicious Mexican and TexMex food and I seriously can’t wait to have so many great options!

Less Layers

We all know what it’s like to get a child dressed to go out in a Canadian winter… so.many.layers!!! And not just the kids! Getting my pregnant self ready to go out in the winter is quite the task! Haha After a decade of living in Alberta, I can hardly imagine a reality where we simply grab a light jacket in the few slightly cooler months, and head out the door… Easy Peazy!

Playgrounds at Restaurants

Y’all!!! This is an absolute game changer for dining out with children! The only restaurants here that have a playground are the same ones that serve happy meals - not my first choice for a family evening. Whether it was going out with friends, or just my mum or Shane, being able to eat as a family, and then have the kids go play while you have adult conversation, is one of my absolute favourite things about dining out in the Austin area! Everything from amazing Tex-Mex to Cafes, BBQ to Local Hamburger joints… I cannot wait!!

If love to hear, what else should we be getting excited about when it comes to moving to Texas? Other than good friends, family, and honky tonks…? I feel like I might have to make another list… ;)

Until I blog again,

Alex
